How much to vent flue or build new fireplace?

I read a home report of a 1950s flat where it was noted that the flue should be vented. I have no idea how much this would cost. Might it be possible to re-open the flue and build a fire place using the existing chimney?
Approximately how much does it cost to
1) have a contractor in to vent the flue
2) open the flue and install a (gas) fire place
The flat is on the 1st floor and the chimney is in the middle, not on an external wall.
cheers.
