Old welsh slate roof tiles

When we purchased our property we inherited several hundreds if not thousands of gorgeous original thin slate tiles that were removed from the roofs of the barns years ago before they collapsed. Some are on rotting wood palettes stacked flat, others are stacked like books on their narrow ends on the soil, and who knows how many are simply in piles under bushes or in the nettles.
My job for the weekend is to fetch them all together, group by size and store safely until we need to use them as part of the barn conversions...probably 18 to 24 months out.
What is th best way to store/stack them? Flat on top of each other or stacked on their ends...they seem so fragile.
Thanks

Slates packed on end for transport. In that wagon, if they were stacked flat, of course they would spill - but I think that the wisdom was to pack them on end as the best way to transport them.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
