homeowner - move to council property?

Hello, This is my first post.

I've just found out my partner is pregnant with our 4th child. I'm a homeowner, we have a 3 bed flat.

My eldest is 12 and the youngest 2 are 2 and 3 years old. It's going to be very cramped.

What benefits can I claim other than the usual child tax credits?

Is it possible to sell the house and move into a 4 bed council property?

its possible to sell and buy yourself a 4 bed house but i wouldnt think you would stand a chance of a council property these days.

you may have a chance because of your daughters disability but it is a very very slim one, just because you are allowed to bid for properties does not mean you will get one. depending on your area there is a lack of properties and i know of at least 5 people who have been bidding for a couple of years now with no luck.

You really should have thought about that before impregnating your beloved. Surely if you want a big family, you make sure you have provision for all the children.

Unfortunately for you, it is highly unlikely that you'll be offered a four bed council house. I would suggest you sell your current home and either move to an area where you can afford a four bed house or rent one.

Whilst the criteria does vary, for many LA's you will not be classed as overcrowded. Hence, choosing to make yourself homeless in the hope of getting a larger property would be very irresponsible.

There are very few 4 bedroomed council houses in my area - and plenty of people who have been on the waiting list for a long time. The chances of getting a 4 bed council property would be zilch and I would imagine this is the case in many areas.

Yes however as you have made yourself intentionally homeless, you would go to the bottom of the list.

In our county, even if you were high up the list you could be waiting decades for even a 3 bed council property and would be expected to exhaust all options for renting in the private sector first, regardless of cost.
  • A friend of mine is a life-long council tenant and currently lives with her 4 children in a 2 bedroomed flat. Unfortunately, children of the same sex will just have to share a bedroom (as I did with my sister in our privately owned family home, until I left and bought my own property). Is there a dining room you could convert, or a garage? Or maybe look into building an extension?

    In a flat?

Agree with utilising the space you have though. We used our dining room and a bedroom when all our three were at home - baby and two teens.

ooops, I misread the OP and thought it was a 3 bed house, not flat. Yes, I agree the extension could be a bit tricky :rotfl:
