I think if you try to open a document created in OpenOffice in Microsoft Office, you'll experience some formatting issues.

Would saving as an excel file be ok ?

I use openoffice on a netbook.

You can save Open Office created files perfectly well as MS Office files. Just change the defaults.
The formatting differences are very minor unless you are using esoteric functions: for 99% of users there will be no issues at all.

If you don't want to pay for a copy of word, just use it for free online via office online - with the added benefit of that you can get your files anywhere.
