You can save Open Office created files perfectly well as MS Office files. Just change the defaults.
The formatting differences are very minor unless you are using esoteric functions: for 99% of users there will be no issues at all.No free lunch, and no free laptop

If you don't want to pay for a copy of word, just use it for free online via office online - with the added benefit of that you can get your files anywhere.0
