Building Problems…

Hi,

I’m currently renting a property undergoing building works. The landlord is extending the rear of the house, and adding an additional bedroom and bathroom. I was informed that this work would begin when I rented the property last year. However, I was assured that the impact would be minimal and that the builders would not require access to the property’s utilities… In hindsight I was clearly a little naïve!

The builders have needed access to water and electricity. I’m not as bothered about the water as there is no meter, but the property has a pre-paid electricity meter which I am solely responsible for funding. As this is accessed via an external socket the builders do not require access to the property to connect so I cannot control or prevent its usage.

I do not deal with the landlord directly, but through an agent. I have contacted them about the usage but they have simply not responded, or suggested that usage will be minimal. I’m due to permanently move out at the end of the month (when internal work will begin), I appreciate that I was informed that the work would begin, but I was explicitly told there would be no impact.

Any advice about what I can do would really be appreciated!

Thanks!

Can you turn the socket off at the circuit breaker? If it's not on it's own circuit, you could turn the circuit it is on off when you go out (don't turn your fridge or freezer off though!).
