BT Yahoo Mail Accounts £1.50 a month?

Does anyone have any recent experience of moving away from BT's broadband service and what happens with your BT Internet mail account?

I've had the same BT Internet mail account since 1996. When I moved away from BT last time (2005), after a few weeks they sent me a mail stating that I had to pay £1.50 a month to retain it.

I moved back to BT around 18 months ago and they told me I could have it for free again.

I'm moving away from them again soon, but wondered if this £1.50 per month still applies?

BT yahoo mail is essentially the same as Yahoo mail, but just with the "btinternet" domain on your e-mail address. So it seems like profiteering for BT to charge for what Yahoo give for free. Of course I could just sign up for a new G mail or yahoo mail account, but then lose the mail address that I've had for 15 years.

Can't be sure if the same applies to BTInternet now but I moved to an LLU ISP about 2 years ago.

When I moved my BT account wasn't cancelled just downgraded to a pay as you go dialup account. Since then I have still been using my BTInternet address.

I believe that they will delete your account if you don't log in over a modem after a time so I connect using their dialup number to check mail on the first of each month. At other times I just connect using my new broadband connection.

The only thing is, if you connect though another ISP with a payg account you can't send mail through the BT SMTP mail server, you can only receive. However you can alter your mail setup in Outlook to use your new ISP mail server for sending mail and making it appear as the mail is from your BTInternet address. Alternatively just use BT webmail to send your mail.

I asked the question of Plusnet when I was thinking of switching to them form talkTalk(AOL). They couldn't answer.

I talked to talktalk and the discounted my fees down to match so stayed.

I know you can have an AOL wbmail a/c for nothing.

I do use webmail, as a PP says, following a hard drive crash.at least I keep my emails now.

I thought you could transport email addresses the same as phone numbers these days.
