Son's laptop has a virus/trojan (don't know the difference, sorry) he is using Vista and has lost his desktop, icons and although the task bar is still there he has no programs listed.
I have googled the problem and found this http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110523041315AAv3IJQ which links to this http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110523041315AAv3IJQ.
How do we know if it is safe to download from this site? or can any one recommend something safe and simple for us to use?

The bleepingcomputer link is safe and recommended.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-vista-recovery
Just work through it, and post if you have trouble following the steps
Let us know how you go with it, and afterwards post the Malwarebytes logs here. We'll suggest some followup to make sure the computer is clean.
(just don't download the StopZilla program that you might see in the ads!)0 -
Yes, follow these instructions from Automated Removal Instructions for Windows Vista Recovery using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Oops! RussJK has already posted....0

You can use this link for Malwarebytes:

Why does peeps keep harping on about viruses and trojans, if ya gets infected then just save all ya files to disc or other such media then restore ya computer to factory settings, in no time at all the job is done and ya is all free of infection. Ya can spend hours trying to get rid of the infection with cleaning programs, which may or may not do the trick .... bung in ya restore discs and have a good clean out ... that's what I say.0
