I replaced my Dyson upright with a Henry (actually a Hetty cos I got the pink one!) and I love it so much more than the Dyson, it's light and powerful and it hoovers the tiles and laminate flooring brilliantly. I wouldn't go back to a Dyson now!!#118 DFW Debt freely Christmas 2012 Challenge0

The hose doesn't reach all the way upstairs, but it's not that hard to do half with it sat on the upstairs landing and half with it sat in the hallway. The actual sucky bit it really thin too, so t reaches all the way under beds and other furniture. With an upright you can only go up to things and i am lazy and don't like to have to move furniture that often!!0

another vote here for the upright! I've had a cylinder and it just didn't have the suction...my latest is a ball Dyson ...... and I love it!:jFlylady and proud of it:j0

Cylinder for me.
Most designs now tend to be stair huggers (but not all), in that they can quite easily sit on a step as you vacuum. I've not seen any with a hose/wand long enough to cover an entire case ; Thus uprights would need to be located at the top or bottom.
Suction (air watts) are pretty comparable.
For me, it's storage. The Cylinders tend to be much easier to store. I went for the Dyson Animal Compact. Tiny foot print for storage, all the on-board tools (including laminate floor tool along with the normal carpet tool) and great suction with air driven bushbar. Downside is the bin is not that large so requires more trips to the empty...but big deal.0
