Hey all,
I bought my Sony Vaio in July 2010 and the battery has really taken a hit in recent weeks/months. The laptop can't be on battery for more than around 10mins before switching off instantly (not hibernating, not saving anything first, just an instant power cut).
Vaio said that as its a consumable and out of 6months, the warranty doesnt cover it.
The battery "health" in the diagnostics is "good", somehow. The laptop runs perfectly when connected to mains power (with the battery in situ, of course). I do regular virus and spyware scans, as well as regular defragging, and it's all come up clean.
Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Is the solution to just get a new battery? (if so, official sony Vs ebay replica?) - i once bought a battery for a toshiba laptop I had from ebay and it worked great.
Thanks for the advice! :T

since bought, have you been periodically letting the battery run down? not just running continuously of the mains -- with the battery inserted? that would affect the 'integrity' of the battery and its life-cycle .A new abacus

Afraid I haven't on a regular basis. The battery stays in when connected to the mains (majority of the time) and only when I need to go portable does the battery come into play and run down. Nowadays with the poor performance I avoid going portable! I did use to let the charge run as you say, but certainly not in recent months.
The laptop + battery are only almost 12 months old, would you expect a battery to tail off in this way so soon?0 -
See what SIW says about the wear on the battery

Designed capacity 42180
Fully charged capacity 28800
Current capacity 22940
Wear level 32%
Estimated charge remaining 79%0 -
I am in the same situation with a Vaio and genuine Sony batteries are expensive. I would pay £150 and the laptop cost £600 so 25% of the cost of the computer every 15 months is a surprise.
Looking at Sony and Vaio user forums it appears that this is the norm,0
