Internet on laptop without a phone line?

Does anyone know the best way of getting the internet on a laptop without a phone line as I've just moved into rented accomodation?

I've seen data cards available but most are on contracts which involve credit checks which I probably wouldn't pass?

Thanks all.

You can get a data card for a lap top and vodafone also do a USB data modem which will work on a PC or a lap top

If you are in a 3G area it is quite fast - if not it runs at about dial up speed.

Yes I believe they are. I've only just moved house and I'm not on the new electoral roll so I probably wouldn't pass the credit check :-(

Yes - a friend of mine has just got this system up and running and they worked on her previous address for credit checking.

Hi, I now have a new laptop and would like to access the internet on a daily basis.

I recently purchased a 3g datacard but within 3 days I'd gone over my limit and spent a lot of money in excess megabytes without knowing until they cut me off. The man in the 3g shop told me that as long as I didn't download music or films etc I'd be fine but obviously not.
Anyway I sent it back within the 14 days and cancelled my contract. I have failed the credit check for T-mobiles unlimited package and also vodafones. Is there anything I can do bearing in mind it isn't my house so I can't install a phone line.
When I switch my internet on it detects a couple of wireless points but it says there is limited or no connectivity or asks for a password. Is there anyway I could buy wireless access or something or another alternative to get internet access. Sorry to sound ignorant.

I hope someone can help me, thanks in advance
  • Depends where you live, there was company who name escapes me for the moment ( helpful eh) who where offering broadband via radio in London & thames valley, their people run about in branded Smart cars, black with yellow at the back - short snappy name but I can't think of it NOW. (edit: Oh the irony !!! )
Only 512mb at the time, was about 9.99, just required a small wireless modem supplied by them on your desk, IF you are in one of their coverage areas
Can't find any links to name I can recognise at the mo

But it was similar to this, but bigger company, parent co was in hong kong IIRC
