Our friends were due to get married in August 2010 at a country hotel. My husband and I had already paid our deposit in the April 2010 for a room so we could stay over. She later fell pregnant and decided to postpone the date to Sept 2011.
We have only just found out that they have now changed venues, so I phoned to get a refund as we no longer need to stay there and they are refusing to pay us our money back!!
They say that we need to take the matter up with the bride and groom and that's the end of it!!
Where do we stand?!
Thanks in advance

What do their booking T&Cs say about cancellations ?0

What would be the point of the deposit if they gave it back when people changed their minds?
The deposit secures your room/item/whatever and means they will turn away other business so you can have that room/service/item. The hotel didn't change their mind, your side did, the hotel are within their rights to decline a refund0 -
They have no responsibility for the brides decision and I agree with the poster above: It was your/the brides decision not the hotels.0

Usually a hotel offers a full refund if you cancel 24 hours prior to arrival (or similar) - check the T&Cs, if it says non-refundable then you are SOL."We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live...........unless we are a chicken" ~ Anon.0
