Agreed on the spares/repairs thing. The problem with these smaller cars is that you can't even rely on a broken one being cheap -- on some cars you might have been able to buy a rusty old heap with a good engine from near the coast or something and move the engine over (the advantage being that you see the donor engine working) but with Clios fetching good money when old this isn't really an option.

Very surprised at the price of that ebay spares clio - if you look back at the completed ads there are loads of working ones sold (or reserve not met) for only a couple of hundred more. Fair enough though if that's what a broken one can fetch it would be reasonable to assume £900 when fixed!

I reckon you'll be able to get your engine fitted for about £150-200 max if you can find somebody on gumtree etc advertising (bit of a risk maybe best getting numbers of previous customers) and I wouldn't pay more than £200 for a clio engine, change the cambelt and waterpump whilst it's out of the car £80-100 in parts and you're good to go. As above though, I wouldn't recommend doing this I would personally just get rid

my dads cam belt went(his own fault) on his scenic cost him around £500 but only needed the head repair as he had just pulled away form a set of lights so expect considerable cost. Might be cheaper just to stick a scrappy engine straight in not bothering with even seeing what wrong with your current one.
