Marzipan!

Well - since finding this wee bit of heaven on the net I've become very OS. Made a few Christmas cakes to give as presents, I was going to marzipan them this weekend, but was a bit shocked to find in the local Somerfield that it's nearly £3 for a wee box..

where is the best place to get nice marzipan which is reasonably priced? Admittedly haven't baked for years but don't remember it being so expensive. I think it's the best bit of the cake!

  • I actually saw marzipan being made last week on the Food Channel. It's unbelievably easy to make.

Here's the recipe but obviously, leave out the chocolate as that's needed to make chocolate marzipan logs.

  • Saw some marzipan in Lidl's the other day. Sorry, can't tell you how much it was, but it was definitely cheaper than £3 for a roll.
What about making your own? Don't know if it would be any cheaper though.
I used to make it years ago, but don't bother anymore as am only one that eats Christmas cake, so not worth the effort for me.

Food Weighhouse if you have one near you is where a friend buys all hers, she makes about 20 cakes.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • I was also stunned  at the price of the stuff in most supermarkets - however, new Lidl opened this week in my local town and lo and behold, marzipan rolls 99p each - so I bought 6! I reckon enough to do my 2 large and 2 small cakes, then there's just the pesky icing - ho hum.:D
And when you give a cake as a present people think it's a cheap option! One of these days I will tot up exactly what it does cost!:A
  • Try your local bakers if there is one (they are dying out fast) They often sell marzipan and the roll out icing quite cheaply.

I always make my own now mainly because of the price but also because I find the shop bought too hard to manipulate. It really is simple and IMHO tastes much better.

I also prefer to make it if only to avoid the evil yellow dye that always seems to be in shop marzipan.

Tried this recipe at the weekend and it worked a treat! And I was a bit worried about the consistency but in many ways it was more malleable than shop bought, and tasted just as good, if not better.

    thanks again!
