How do you find who owns a house

Hi dont know were to post this it may be in the wrong place .........
My house is up for auction and I need to move I have found a lovely flat but no one seems to know who owns it ..............I have emailed the council and they said that they cant give me that info I have google it but without paying £16 I cant find anything.
Anyone else know how I can find out ???
There are only 2 neighbours and they hav only been there a short time and they hav never seen anyone.

    Oppps sorry I am looking to rent I do know that it as been rented out before as the landlord from next door told me but he dose not
    know who owns it ............. I dont hav £4 to spare and it does say when you goolge that it can be done free..........
    but I hav spent all morning tring to find out ...............I have put a letter though the door 2wks ago......

    Think you'll find an awful lot of people pay their own rent.
    It's someone else's fault.
  • The land registry is always the best bet. You don't mention if the flat is actually available at the moment. Where have you seen it advertised?
