Wood stripping

I bought a couple of wood chairs at a car boot yesterday for next to nothing and want to strip the paint from them. I am a single parent with three young children and as such, am not keen on some of the more chemical methods, nor on the idea of a heat gun as the children are around all the time and it's difficult to be 100% safe when there's not another adult to distract and keep an eye out. There are a number of so-called 'eco friendly', non toxic gels on the market and I was wondering if anyone had used these with reasonable success? I have searched this forum and the consensus seems to be that the heat gun is the best way of doing stripping wood. Is this a bit the bullet situation and just work at it when the children are in bed?!

We've recently used something called 'Great Strip', to remove gloss from door hinges. I mean years and years of gloss paint. It's a blue gel that you paint on, leave for a while, then take off. The OH was delighted with it, especially as it didn't come with the dire warnings that some do. We got it Homebase, hth.
