xp problems

have just built a computer the computer has started to operate as though another program is running in the back ground and the red hard drive light is flashing the computer works OK but it is annoying when you constantly hear this background noise i have tried the computer with the downloads swiched off and switched off the indexing but it is still the same

the computer data is

You don't say how much RAM you have in there. It's possible it's just the swap file doing its thing. It may also be System Restore and/or Shadow Copies being created depending on the speed of the hard drive read/write and the system overall.

I tend to avoid ASUS motherboards so I'm not sure whether FourEngine uses a lot of read/write routines in its power management function.

You could try temporarily disabling these one at a time to see if the hard drive activity decreases. It may be a combination of actions causing the hard drive to be busy.

I just spotted you're using AVG anti virus too. AVG has become a resource hog in some of the later releases, you might want to consider trying Avast instead. AVG is another thing to try disabling too, just make sure you're disconnected from network/internet and don't plug in any external drives while your anti virus is disabled. In fact i'd probably try this one first.
