A company has taken money from an expired visa debit card, I could not give my new card details because I had not had my new card as it had gone missing in the post, I had informed them and they agreed to wait for payment until the 20th of June, but 10 days after it expired they still charged it how can they do that? if its expired I have not been able to use it ? Its put me in trouble with my direct debits for my phone, insurance and gas, now as I was not expecting a payment to go out to them until the 20th. My new card had been cancelled and had to be reissued as it had gone missing so how could they get money even if the numbers are the same which I am not sure if they are, if its expired then I thought that was it, can anyone advise on this please, will have a few dd charges now.
Thanks in advance.

It wouldn't matter even if the number had changed. You gave them permission to take money, on an ongoing basis, from your account. They have done it.
Even if you closed down your credit card account, that company would still have permission to keep billing the account until you wrote to them and cancelled their authority.0 -

The OP states in both the title of the post and the text that it's a debit card.0 -
Continuous/rolling authority as biggles mentions, can apply to either credit or debit cards. Take a look here for more info.
Alternatively I'd imagine - but someone else might correct me on this- merchants don't have to request funds there and then -offline- so they must have some leeway. Otherwise, you can use your credit/debit card at 23:59 on the day of expiry and as it's posted the following day/week in a batch, they'd not get paid as its now expired.0
