bt debt collectors

hi all

i got disconnected from bt just before xmas for not paying my bill. bt sent me a letter saying to pay etc so i rang and they said if i wanted reconnecting i had to pay £214 i owed them and that was it so i paid them. they then turned my phone back on and internet but gave me a different number. i then started to recive letters from bt saying i still owed them £290 more even tho they said £214 which i paid and they would reconnect me and i would be up to date with payments. i now recive my normal bill which is fully up to date and have been reciving letters from a debt collector for £290. they never even mentioned the extra £290 they said im all up to date with 214. i have rang bt they put me through to india who then tell me to hold for along time then put phone down or when they do get back to me say they will get back to me after they have looked into it and never do. is ther anything i can do?

email them, complaints are good at getting back to you
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

email this chap, the chief exec of BT Group.

It might sound a bit extreme but lots of people have reported success stories when emailing him.

As a guess, I wonder if you have two accounts running with BT.

It's probably best to send them a letter about this, specifically asking how the £290 they're now seeking was accrued. Details at http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact/. Just select the I want to complain option at the bottom of the list.

Ask them to "tax" the bill
every thing itemised and broken down in to every cost.
If they refuse it can really go bad if they go to court.

Not enough info really. If you had been disconnected for owing them £214, you would have to pay that plus a reconnection charge on top. You might also have to pay a quarterly line rental/broadband charge which is chargeable in advance-depends what tariff you are on-you didn't say.
Break down what the charges are for from your bill/online account.
