which cat flap?

My cat has only recently started wanting to go out to play (he was too scared before!!) but I don't have a cat flap. At the moment I just open a window for him but obviously he can only go out when I am home, and I make sure he is back in before I go out anywhere as I wouldn't want him to ever be shut out and scared because he's unable to come back in.

There are several reasons I am unsure which cat flap would be best:

1. There are a lot of cats that live around us, and several are quite happy to wonder into my house. My cat is fairly unhappy about this when they do follow him in through a window, but he is too much of a wuss to do anything about it himself, so just meows until I go to see what the problem is!

2. My cat won't wear a collar, he always finds a way to get it off so I can't use one of the magnetic/ infra red identity flaps.

3. I have looked at the microchip recognition flaps which seemed ideal until I saw they need a power supply, which I don't have near the back door where the flap would have to go.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Can you put a microchip cat flap anywhere other than the back door (window, wall)? Use an extension lead for power, or have a new surface mounted socket installed? maybe this website will inspire you!

I have a microchip cat flap that doesn't need a power supply (it runs off batteries that should last at least 6 months.) It's the best thing I ever bought and has kept out the unneutered tom cat who terrorised Humbug :-)

The one I have is the Sureflap - bought it for £64.99 from here

    Hope this helps

I have Sureflap as well - it's great, although our little moglet can open it (from inside) when it's set to the lock from inside open from outside setting! (Works fine when fully locked though, she hasn't figured that out yet...)

Yes Sureflap doesn't need a power supply.
We have a petporte, our smart cat can open it when it's locked at night, cheeky! Both makes seem to have really good reviews.
If your cat doesn't like other cats in the house (and why would he?!) I would just go straight for the sureflap if you can afford it.

If I were you I would definitely get a microchip recognition cat flap - everyone I know who has them thinks they are great.

My cat is 17 now so for various reasons its probably not worth the investment plus training him to use it as he isn't the brightest but if I get more cats after him I will definitely get one.

I have had years of other people's cats coming in, eating my cats food, even sleeping on my bed  and sofa  and its a nightmare!
