Most smoker annuities state that you have to have smoked for 10 years with no break, and sometimes they do a swab test, I work for an IFA and I have seen this happen. How much alcohol do you drink? There are companies who use this as a niche market and offer enhanced annuities for people who drink over 35 units of alcohol per week, again they may very well check this out via your GP.
    2008 - £6,000.00, 2009/10 - Didn't comp

Just to be clear, is this at any time in your life or for the 10 years prior to taking the annuity?--I know, I'm a little bit thick!

They also do the random checks not just at the start but can also do them later in life.

Hi dunstonh, when you say later in life, what do you mean? Years?

I have never seen one occur in later life but have been told they happen. it would be years.

Thanks for that. What would happen if someone is advised to stop smoking for health reasons a few years after starting pension?

That would be recorded on their GP records. So, no problem.

  • my son told me about enhanced annuities due to a good case of a well lived life - 54 now and want to get the most out of my pension as possible - anyone recommend any or does it depend on my health issues?

Will all depend on your health issue and the provider you choose.

I would suggest a specialist IFA for an impaired annuity search.

Any local IFA should be able to handle this. However, you cannot access your pension to 55 at the earliest and the general rule of thumb is that you should not commence your pension early if you dont need it. Especially if buying an annuity rather than the unsecured pension option.
