in Credit cards
Can anyone inform me how long a shop has to claim payment from your credit card company? By this I mean the vast majority of credit card transactions appear on your statement the same or next day but occasionally some take longer to appear, if you buy something by post for example or using the old manual swipe systems, or some never seem to show up at all, perhaps due to an oversight somewhere along the line.
I purchased an item on 1 December that has still not shown up on my statement.
I have heard the limit by which payment may be claimed is 6 months. I have tried various searches on the web on this subject to no avail.

I'm not sure if there is a limit but I know of instances where it has actually taken up to six months for transactions to appear. Like you say, the transaction method itself has a large effect. Are you trying to ensure you that pay or ensure that you don't? You can always call the card issuer or the retailer.0

I think the company has 6 years to take the payment. It's probably best to ring them so it doesn't suddenly show up some time down the line when you are not expecting it. It is probably an error though. I would say if they haven't taken it yet they probably won't, but you can't be sure and you wouldn't want it to take you over your credit limit if it does get claimed.I'm married now! Yippee!0

What if a credit card was closed and the shop tried to take the payment? What would happen then?

If the card were merely closed they would honour the payment request and pay up. Then they pursue you for the money.
There are several threats on this forum about this happening.

6 months sounds right
in theory they should take it asap as they cant use this money (buy stock/pay debts/earn interest etc) until they do. looks like an oversight
get in touch with them.
