Crazy Electricity Bill
About 4 months ago I was presented with my electricity bill for £1500. I live in a 1 bed flat that has no central heating other than electric heaters and an emersion tank. The £1500 is for 3 months over the winter period. My Land lady deals with paying the bills for the properties and takes meter readings to work out how much we pay, she showed me the working out but after asking around I still think this amount cannot possibly be right? I only have an electric cooker and small fridge and few small electric items like a kettle and microwave. The electric heaters were on pretty much all the time for a few weeks when it was snowy,so I did expect it to be higher than normal, but my previous bill for the Autumn period had been £272? So far I've paid up £600 of the bill, but am loathed to pay more until it has been investigated. I'm suspicious that my land lady hasn't shown me a bill from whatever company she uses and she promised to get someone out to check my electrics ages ago but so far no one has been.

What do you mean, the landlady pays your bills?
What is the agreement? Who's name is on the bill? If it's the LL, then she has to pay the supplier.
What is your agreement to pay? If the agreement is that the LL pays and you repay the LL, then get a copy of the bill. (This is a very risky arrangement for any LL to set up)
If your rent covers the energy too, then the bill is nothing to do with you.
We need more info on your arrangement."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
sounds dodgy to me. I dont pay £1500 a year, granted i dont have electric heating, but still..0

Just tto agree with everyone else who's posted, that's a huge ammount. I wouldn't even think of paying that without seeing the bill first and checking the meter readings. It could be that there have been estimated reads for years and years, meaning that this balance has built up (thought you say the landlady takes regular readings so that shouldn't happen), it could be that she's got a reading wrong at some point meaning the bill is incorrect, or there could be something else going on.
Whatever it is though, I doubt that bill is correct...I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0
