Halifax Student Card..

Do you have to have one of their student accounts to get it? It doesn't mention it on the home page about it. Do Halifax have quite strict requirements?

Does anyone know what CRA Halifax look at so I can see if there's anything amiss if I want to apply?

I don't know if they have changed the rules more recently, but my son has a Halifax credit card and doesn't have a student account with Halifax.

When my son did his application online it told him he had been declined. A few days later however, he had a letter arrive asking him to take proof of identity to a branch so the card account could be set up. If you get declined online there is still a chance you will be accepted as my son was.

Thanks :) They dont seem to set a fixed income, I'm a retail supervisor when not studying so my hours/income varies all the time. I might wait a few more months and get some more 0's behind me until I apply. (Had BC Initial since 10/10, Tesco Phone Contract since 01/11, Barclays CAP since 02/11, only YPA held since 09/09 but that wasnt credit scored)

I was accepted for the Clarity Rewards as a student, albeit at 21.9% AER. I don't have a student account with Halifax, but I do have a Reward account which is used as my main current account.

Cheers, I'm just debating if its worth applying, I know it's a 'Student' card and all but would someone mind just saying if its worth a punt or not?
I have the following reporting, no breaches of T&C's or missed payments etc.
Barclaycard Initial (£260 limit, since 10/10)
Barclays Current Account Plus (£10 overdraft limit, since 01/11)
    Tesco Phone Contract (Since 01/11)
  • I don't see why not. My son had a barclays young persons account and that was all. He did have a Halifax savings account but we were trustees so he had no day to day dealings with it and it had been closed before he applied for the credit card.

He was accepted in September 2009 for his card so I don't know if they have changed the rules since then but you have more credit history than he had. I am assuming you are or will be a student though because I think he did have to say where he would be studying.

Are you carrying an interest bearing balance on it? Or is it only used for purchases and settled in full each month?

Generally the latter, I've carried over a balance on it a few times though.
