bad boy
for a foody and self professed strawb lover Hugh fell way under the bar.
Basic research would have told him that there were a thousand strawb varieties not `dozens`.
But thats a minor point compared to his `taste off`.
I could only see the names of two of the three varieties mentioned; florence, and the mispelled `senata`.
Since Sonata is second only to Elsanta as the leading supermarket cardboard strawb, I`m not surprised florence won.
But it really is a mediocre strawb (he said it had `a little bit` of aroma, great strawbs should burst with aroma), he could have introduced the public to the ambrosia of mara, alpine and gariguette. Too lazy.
He picked up a few points with the maceration tip, but the vinegar isnt really necessary, and the black pepper grind on top is just a chefs gimmick.
Cootambears simplicity guide;
1. half an hour after picking, sprinkle with sugar and after 10 minutes pour on a little cream (less is more). eat
2. google `eton mess` and choose the simplest recipe
3. plant the best varieties you can, it makes a massive difference.

Oh dear must do better. I did enjoy the program though so thanks for letting us know it was on.
Strawberry and Geranium jam! Who'd have thought it? Will have to try that.....if I ever get more than 1 strawberry every couple of days.0 -

Have to disagree that pepper is only a chefs gimmick. I try and serve things differently, or no more than times the same way in a season. Pepper is a great way to serve strawberries, as is with some light, soft goats cheese and a bit of pepper. YUM.
But our single favourite recipe is with balsamic, grenadine and mascarpone...a BBC saturday morning cooking recipe so good they couldn't conintue with the presenting as noone could stop eating it. I last made this about two years ago and will probably make it this weekends

I agree, I have been doing this for years, only on a cut strawberry so the juice can absorb0 -
