Main tip though - use Heathrow and get a connecting flight.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Further to the good site suggestions made by withabix - keep in mind the following:
Certain days / times to depart / return are more expensive (as much as 100 quid plus). So try not to book the flight time for a Friday for example when the Business people fly back from client meetings. Try to fly out / come back on Day's like Tuesday, Wednesday. You can always try a few different searches and nudge the dates to see the difference in prices.
The actual time that you try to book makes a difference, you will see prices fluctuate through out the day and week. For example they know that Monday lunchtime People are more likely to browse and book flights and holidays then compared to Friday when they feel more cheerful and have the weekend ahead of them.
Heathrow to BKK:
Eva Air do a good direct service from Heathrow to BKK and their planes are fairly new so you get pretty good food and watch on demand films and TV.
Emirates, Qatar pretty good, but you get a stopover which may be better if you want a fag and like to break the journey into two.
BKK to Koh Samui.
You can book this online here:

Approximate price is about 60 quid return.0 -
I seem to recall that Thai and Bangkok are the only airlines that fly into Samui.
We took an overnight train to Surat Thani, then a ferry to Samui. This was really pleasant. Depart Bangkok 19.30, arrives Surat Thani 08.30.
We took a flight back to Bangkok for the journey home - from Samui (really nice airport btw).
Suspect the flights might be a bit more than £60 return though! I think it cost us £100 each one way! Bit of a monopoly.
Train was about £28 2nd class sleeper, dinner was about £3, taxi to ferry £6, ferry £3?
Hope this helps.0 -
I've done this a few times. Fly Emirates to Bangkok via Dubai (not always the absolute cheapest but they are always close, their service is very good and they fly from regional UK airports) then fly Bangkok Airways down to Koh Samui - it's no frills but the flight is only about an hour. Typically I would stop over in Bangkok for 2 or 3 days on the way out or back.
Samui has one of the nicest airports in the world - all thatched roof an open sides - but unfortunately they are replacing it with a modern one to cope with increased tourism.0 -

Just returned from BKK with Qatar - an airline I swore I would never use again after an awful experience a few years ago, however, on this occasion, it was a completely different situation.
Great staff, flights on time and a good price - the only downside is Doha airport where you get bussed on and off although this will be resolved when the airports construction is completed.
As for Koh Samui, as long as Thai and Bangkok Air have the monopoly, flights will continuoulsy be relatively expensive - they have certainly increased from last year although I will concede that I am usually in Thailand around Christmas time.
