Punto advice needed

OK, so long story short is Mum's punto decided to break down this morning, she thinks that the gearbox is gone - yippee [/sarcasm]

now it's a 53 plate and well, replacing the car isn't an option, so any ideas roughly how badly we're gonna get done for a new gearbox & fitting? (since i doubt that'll be covered by the warranty she got with the car)

There are plenty of Fiat specialist breakers to be found on Google.

Or even easier do a search of eBay, find a used low mileafe gearbox as a new one will be nearer £1000 than you may think, 6speed box for a Mondeo is £2800 new fromFord for example, so used is a sensible option.

Then find a clytch kit from somebody kike Eurocarparts, German and Swedish or online at buypartsby or similar.

Any competwnt garage can fit a gearbox and clytch to a Punto.

Or you could ring Mr Clutch as they could give you an all in fitted price for gearbox and clutch.

theres plenty of s/h gearboxes on ebay cheap at the moment, usually they are quite dear so its a supply and demand issue i guess which might change next week.
A reconditioned gearbox is no guarantee its any good, unless purchased from a long term respected gearbox rebuild specialist who comes recommended by your local garage, thats going to do the work.
If you go s/h ask garage to check first motion shaft and change the oil seal as a matter of course
A new clutch should be £100 for a quality one although i have been told ecp clutches at a lot less are good but ive never tried them

nice one, just wanted atleast an idea before heading into a garage with that middle aged bloke in overalls going "well, it's not good" and firing off a figure which i'd expect to pay for a Holiday!

How long has she had the car since you mention a warranty?

10 months - and no doubt more than enough miles to suggest it wasn't coopered at time of purchase :D

Mmm, so SOGA will be of little help then. Is the warranty still in place? Have you checked to see if it covers the transmission?

In my experience "gearbox gone" is a very broad term, could be anything from snapped cable, faulty slave cylinder, clutch, even linkages falling off.

What is the pedal doing? can you select gears with the keys out of the ignition?

If it is a dead box then I recommend a recondition box rather then go scrappys for a condition unknown box

My mates mum left her car on the drive for 3 weeks because "the gearbox was gone", when in fact all that happened was she tried to start the car when it was already started, heard the grinding noise from the starter motor and assumed it was the gearbox.

I think someone needs to look at this car properly before diagnosing the gearbox..... Knowing Fiats, it's probably just another snapped clutch cable.

well from what i've seen (i dont drive, so am mostly useless) the gearstick can't find gears & appears to be very loose and there's "spots" of fluid coming from somewhere - she's not quite as bad as thinking it's goosed because she's trying to start an already running car :D

She'll be on the phone to the garage tomorrow after work, sometimes i'm slightly perplexed as to why i decided to muck about with audio technology when clearly i should have went to train as a mechanic!

from that stick being lose sounds like linkage fell off might be nothing, spots of fluid clear? yellowy, clear dark brown? tells me it could be a hydrolic clutch and the slave cylinders leaking

    lol@ Strider590,
I once got called out to recover a brake down, only to find the petrol had been put into the engine. I dont get is how he walked to the petrol station walked past people filling up only to end up filling his sump with petrol
