My understanding is that for purchases there is no charge in the eurozone (and a few other European countries) and a 1% loading outside. No transaction fees in either.

It is on their website under classic card (or reward card if you still have one)

They changed the terms a bit earlier this year, but gave some notice:

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/creditcard/offer-deals.htm
Commission-free purchases abroad - Enjoy unlimited commission-free purchases abroad until 31st July 2011 plus the ability to earn more commission-free foreign usage.

If the OP is travelling after July, they need to "earn" fee-free purchases by spending on the card in the months before.
    Enjoy the silence...

Is that not only for new card holders? I thought original Gold Card holders are still on the old terms.

That's my understanding - holders of gold, classic and reward cards are still on the old terms.

I have a reward card and certainly haven't received notice of any change.

That's right. The old cards are just subject to the VISA charge for purchases ie 1% outside Europe, nothing in Europe. See the T&C's http://www.nationwide.co.uk/creditcard/legal.htm

I can confirm that it's still 1% outside of Europe on the old gold visa.

Hi, from memory, the charges are built into the exchange rate they use so you'll never see them. You'd need to refer to your terms and conditions leaflet.

I wouldn't use it for cash withdrawals as you don't get an interest free period.

I've used a reward card for purchases in $US since 1 August for only the 1% loading - no fees
