Generally an ethernet cable only has one type of connection on it, that is an RJ45 and pictured by the previous poster. If your laptop doesn't have this port, then an ethernet cable will be no good to you.

Ok these are my new results with the Ethernet cable plugged into my laptop and the back of the router!
There are four holes at the back of my router does it matter which the cable goes in?
