hey Guys
We have decided to paint our house as its looking a bit tired, its just roughcast at the moment(ex council house) but the rough cast is sound.
looking for good recomendations of masanory paint brands, also the amount required might be helpful..one coat also would be good,i reckon i have approx 150m2 to cover..got a tip of 5m2 per litre of paint but not sure if thats accurate or not...

Do you want the best?
There is a product, epoxy based, that stands head and shoulders above all the water based/limited life/crap.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
if you stick to dulux weathershield or sandtex you won't go far wrong , there may be some epoxy based paints that are uber fantastic but in my experience you can have any paint you like , but houses move , cracks open , the walls get dirty and will need to be repainted, make sure you get the trade versions , steer well clear of the dulux stuff you get in homebase etc0

Just remembered what it was we used on my daughters house last year. After loads of asking around we settled on Sandtex Trade 365. Pleolite rein based (or something similar). Messy and needs good cleaning stuff and disposables but makes a superb job with primer + 2 topcoats.
Only time will tell,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

sorry for the hijack, but where do you get dulux trade from?0

I get mine from them direct from them: http://www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/index.jsp - 10% discount if you get a card from them (for non-trade customers like me)
but any decent paint emporium should do it
+1 for glidden pliolite masonary paint again from me0 -

their prices are a lot more than i pay at my local builders merchants , for 5lts of mixed smooth masonry paint they are charging £47:eek::eek:
i think i'm only paying around £37 :T0 -
Hi, I have in excess of 30 years experience in exterior finishes and times have moved on since the stock advice of Dulux or Sandtex . Whilst these are decent you should take heed of what people are saying re lasting 3 to 4 years and needing two coats etc.
Your walls are roughcast so to have to repaint every 3 to 4 years is no laughing matter particularly if paying someone or hiring access equipment ! There are some fantastic nano paints from household names that have been proven to last at least 10 to 15 years, actually self clean when it rains and are resistant to cracking as they flex and breathe. You can see loads of info and videos on Youtube by searching nano paints or self cleaning paint coatings.
The downside is that these super paints cost around £100 per tin compared to around £30 for a Dulux/Sandtex but last 3 times as long whilst also not fading or oxidising and are fully breathable as well.
Whatever you decide to use make sure the walls are power washed clean with a fungicide before you start and any loose or flaky paint is removed properly with any small cement repairs left to fully harden before over painting.
Final tip is to always start painting on the elevation that is not in direct sunlight and work around the house following the shade if at all possible.0
