You should use an enzyme-based cleaning product to get rid of the scent to cat noses, which are far more sensitive than ours. Do not use bleach or other such cleaning products as they will stop the enzymes working by denaturing them. Secondly you need to establish why one or more clean animals are suddenly choosing to toilet outside the litter tray. This may be down to a health problem (cystitis, diabetes, kidney infection, CRF), stress-related (new kitten), territorial (neighbour's cat peeing near the front door), may be one cat guarding trays, one cat not willing to pee where there is another cats wee, dislike of new litter, lack of privacy, dirty or smelly trays (scoop more often, clean with enzymes, don't use hooded tray). Females can be very territorial even when neutered, you might have been better to get a male kitten; if you are confident the problem is stress or territorial, Feliway diffuser can work wonders and is cheapest on eBay.

From experience the product 'Simple Solutions' is good for this.

biological washing powder, although i have to say that my old diabetic cat was a prolific wee-er at times where her medication was getting stable or when she became resistant to it and i had to take the carpet up

this is where lino is best!

One of my cats has the odd mishap unfortunately.. have taken her to the vet several times, she had a clean bill of health every time. Litter tray is constantly cleaned - changed every week, scooped every day. I think some cats may just be that way inclined :\

When we had pups we had to shampoo the carpet frequently to make sure any misshaps were properly cleaned deep and as wee is a strong alkaline I found adding some lemon juice to the wash solution helped to really ensure that there was no lingering smell at all.
