Immersion heater Query

I have a small 10 litre immersion heater which heats just my hot water through the taps not the shower etc.

My question is at the minute i keep the heater off until i need the hot water i then turn it on an hour before i need the water is this the right or wrong thing to do money wise lol

If it's a modern solid foam lagged tank, then you could leave it on all the time because the insulation will keep the water hot for upto 48hrs after the initial heat up. The thermostat will stop the element heating up when it's up to temperature.
If it's an older type with a jacket type insulation or no insulation, then these aren't very efficient and I wouldn't leave it on and would carry on as you are doing.

You are doing the correct thing.

I would never recommend leaving an electric immersion on 24/7, new or otherwise - not unless you want a huge electric bill

Why not fit a simple programmer/timer on the circuit so that you don't have to remember to switch it on and off?
I wouldn't have thought that 10l takes an hour to heat up though?

Good point - I missed that.

In fact I don't think I've ever seen a tank that small with an immersion heater fitted. Is there one?
