Vet has given me some antibiotic capsules which need to be cracked open and sprinkled on food.
How do you persuade your pet to eat food with antibiotic powder on their food?

I'd get a tin of fish in tomato sauce ... am just trying to think which ... probably sardines ... something really stinky that will appeal to kitty's tastebuds ... I'd scrape off most of the sauce but would leave just enough for the powder to mix into then there isn't anything apparent for kitty to see and be put off by!
Good luck ... !!0 -
Agree with YorkiePud - something smelly. Tuna usually works for mine - just give a wee bit with the antibiotics in and another wee bit once it's gone as a bit of a treat. (I also find that as they've had "proper" tuna after it doesn't put them off it).

Another vote here for pilchards or sardines in tomato sauce. Mix the powder in the tomato sauce. I've yet to meet a cat that doesn't lap it up!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Sorry, I have to put my vote in for a cat that won't eat anything other than her tinned cat food and crunchies!
She's a bit of a diva and will only eat her normal everyday food. She's never been big on any sort of kitty treats, tuna, fish or chicken - has always turned her nose up and would rather starve.
Giving her tablets when she's ill is a nightmare - I just have to stick them down the hatch and hope she swallows it! She's already 12 yo, so goodness only knows what I'll have to do if she ever gets really sick in older age.:wave:A highly active brain needs feeding often0 -
My kitty is 19 yrs old & dosen't do too bad for her age. Although does cost a fortune in regular health checks at the vets.
The vet has given her some antibiotics to hopefully clear up a touch of gingivitis that she has. The vet normally gives her an injection as she really struggles swallowing tablets. However, these are capsules that you crack open and sprinkle the powder onto the food.
I've never had to do this before, so basically sprinkled it onto her regular cat food. Unfortunatly, she seems to know it's there & is avoiding the food at all costs.
SHe does like mackeral, so I will try the pilchards/sardines in tomatoe sauce. Hopefully I can con her0 -
I agree - definitely smelly fish in tomato sauce - it works for my very fussy girl!
Your cat must be doing well at 19 to still have a sense of smell - I used to be able to trick my old boy in to eating normal cat food with antibiotic powder on it (presumably because he couldn't smell it - either that or he was just plain greedy!).
Good luck!0 -
Owner of obviously the only 2 that won't touch fish in tomato sauce:( - tried and failed miserably!
can't believe the price of tuna - just been to the supermarket and 55p for their value one (not that long ago they were 23p).Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I just mix it in and feed the kitty slightly later than normal. Mine all seem to scoff the food before they realise that there's something else in it.0

For a very fussy cat, she has eaten a small portion of pilchards in tomatoe sauce including first antibiotic. Another 2 to go for today, then another 8 days.
I am hoping she takes the full course as she has a touch of gingivitus & if the antibiotics clear it up, she won't have to undergo any dental work.
Can't believe how expensive going to the vets has got. This trip was quite expensive, in fact was in a bit fo shock when I looked at the receipt.0 -
LOL - I think I've "done well" if I come out having paid anything less than £100!
Glad to hear she's had the 1st lot successfully - fingers crossed they all go down as easily!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
