Can't use an extending lead because she's FAR too big for it, would just brake the barrel when she runs. .

How big is she? My adult male rottweiler uses extending leads and we have yet to have one break. They are 8m long which gives plenty room for a bit of independence but not enough that the dog can cause mayhem in the park. They are for dogs up to 75kg which is 11.8 stones so unless your dog is over that weight (unlikely for any !!!!!) you should be ok.

The idea with extending leads is that you don't let them run to the end of the barrel. The lead has a brake that allows you to take control before then and like with any lead if you are needing close control of the dog you should have it close by you.

The other option is a long line which you can get VERY long but I struggle with these as I walk both dogs at once and it is really hard to juggle a long line with another lead. The benefit of long lines is that you can leave them trailing behind the dog and it is just a case of grabbing or standing on the lead if the dog takes off. These shouldn't be used in busy parks though or you will have everyone tied up in knots!

Well, we are back from the vets. She was a little angel if you ignore the fact she covered just about everything in slobber! :rotfl:

Vet checked her over and gave her a clean bill of health, she was given her jab, but she was that busy trying to see if she could grab a power nap she didn't notice! :D Typical. The only thing that motivates this one is sleep and the toilet!

I can't use the long line we have with her because I find it a bit of a death trap....I'm very clumpsy. That said we just took her out to do some training on the park and she was a superstar! Like you've all said, we are going back to basics with her and will just keep being firm and alert to other dogs.

I've also discovered a fish treat that she likes so I'm going to get more of that and cut it up. She won't eat prawns...she fires little things like that at people. Don't ask. She's the oddest dog I've ever owned. Very sweet though. But I've used extender leads in the past (with the brake) and they've broken. Not to mention the dogs seemingly try to strangle themselves at the end of it. She's still full of puppy madness and would no doubt do that.

Oh and the vet seemed to think the ignorance and clinginess (which is new) could indicate she's ready to come into season soon. Fingers crossed...then she can be spayed over summer while I'm off work.

    Not advice really.

When I was growing up my family got a German shepherd.

She was a great dog and then started doing a similar thing and just bolting off and not returning on command .
I watched her run off and then went and hid behind some bushes.
She had a frantic 2 or 3 minutes when she decided to come back when she couldn't find me.
This did the trick , although I don't know whether I would recommend it as a training method , especially if your dog has a good sense of smell as they will just track you down.

She accidently went the wrong way round a bush once and lost sight of me. She panicked and despite me calling her and waving so she could see me as I reappoached her, she ran round like a headless chicken looking for me. I don't think her brain engaged at all. I've a feeling she'd leg it after the first person she saw to see if it was me. So probably not the best idea.

As it is, I need her in my eye line at all times at the minute if nothing else. Did bring back a funny memory though so thanks.

mind mine can do that for a good 2 or 3 weeks before her season. the reason i didn't berate you about putting her on her lead in parks or HAVING to have her neutered is you seem to have common sense!
my !!!!! is unneutered and believe it's upto the individual. as a responsible owner who has never had a litter of puppies i think it is possible to have a b1tch and not have unwanted pups. over the years having been around 50- 60 working !!!!!es only neutering due to health reasons (ie prolapsing ueterus) believe it possible to leave them unneutered.
i forgot to mention if she does bolt you could use a toy as a distraction or like with mine by walking the opposite direction (mission like) and giving a quick call she soon comes running.

there is also a spray that masks the smell of a season that may help if the boys start liking her!!

    sorry for the essay.
