It's also worth bearing in mind that Rescues often have pups too, not just adult dogs.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

    We got our puppy today.

I wanted a rescue Dog but Hubby was weary, and because the new dog would be hubbies as we had to have Sam put to sleep last month, I had no say :(
. But When my dog passes away that is exactly where I will be going, to a rescue.

And many of those puppies are born in rescue or taken there soon afterwards, so socialised properly from the start, checked by a vet and expect you to return to them if there are any problems. My last cat was a rescue and was in a foster home (i.e. not a cattery) for over six months, so they were spot on about his temperament, likes and dislikes. If you have children or other pets I would argue it's safer to get a dog or cat that has been fostered for a while than to buy a puppy. All my (adult) rescue cats have been darlings, no behaviour problems whatsoever. :)
