even if you do pay for the royal mail redirection, it is not perfect. I have received mail for the people that bought my house, effectively their mail was redirected twice.

I think you buy redirection for a period depending on how long you want to pay for. Possibly some people erroneously assume that they will have been contacted by everyone who needs to mail them within one month, or perhaps three months. Either way, once your contract has expired the mail will revert to the original addressee.

The only way to avoid this when you move is to write to everyone who might write to you, and if you don't, then be prepared for the consequences.

Yes you chose the length of time you want to pay for but silvercar is right, the royal mail re-direction isn't at all reliable. I paid for a years redirection both times I moved and it certainly did not redirect all the post over the year. It really depends on how good your local postmen are and also if they run out of labels it stops for a while. Eventually I posted regular test letters and they didn't all get through. Also had quite a lot of post sent on by my buyer during the year. I suspect a lot of people who don't keep good records don't notice the missing post!

Meanwhile I am still getting mail for my daughter who moved away about nine years ago.
My father once complained my post was going to his house .So I paid royal mail to redirect MY mail .That was a big disaster .Royal mail redirected all the post going to my parents house (not just my post ) .They then delivered it to the wrong address ,cheques went missing and where cashed ,the police where involved .Much easier to notify everyone myself.

Royal mail do say redirecting post for only some people of the same surname isn't recommended. If the Smiths ever brought house from other Smiths it would be impossible.

The point is that even when you've notified companies it still takes some of them a while to update their records, or if they make an error and don't change the address it takes a while to notice. Some financial institutions require you to jump through hoops to prove the new address which you can't do till you've a utility bill for the new address.

For example Abbey were an absolute pain. You have to ring them up, they send you a form, you fill in and send back, they lose the form, you ring and complain, they (wrongly) tell you the update will take 8 weeks, you go mad. Repeat the whole process twice more and you may get a result!

An online share trading company were also a right pain. On upgrading their system they sent an authorisation password to my old address, despite my telling them I'd moved but didn't have the utility bill to prove it yet, thankfully this letter was redirected to me. If it hadn't been then someone else would have had my account password!
