We're fortunate to deal with an estate agent that works a few hours sunday and they let us bring an electrician. The verdict was that only a small amount was pvc and the bulk still rubber.

The doors arent just something we want, but something we need. Due to unusual circumstances they are not in good nick at all.

We want it too much to risk scuppering it for a grand or so and take it on the chin.

You can certainly ask. Be honest, explain it is a cost that you had not expected and would they be prepared to go halves on it. They may say no, particularly if the property has already been priced to reflect the fact it needs a lot of updating (which may be the case if it doesn't even have central heating - exactly the situation with the house we're currently buying). But I doubt they would pull out of the sale just because you asked politely.

Before you do anything - you should get a full written Periodic Inspection Report from a NICEIC/ELECSA registered electrician, which will tell you exactly what is needed. This will support any negotiating you do. A verbal "it needs a rewire" is unlikely to get you far. Apologies if you already have the full report.

If we were able to get the vendor to go halves. How would that effect things? would the money just come off the purchase price? How much would it slow things down making alterations to that

The money will come off the purchase price. It may cause a slight delay.

Full rewire, or just a new fuse box?

Not 100% sure. Got permission from vendor for a closer inspection when we can next get access.
