Old Bank account - disputed debt

Ok, my son had a current account with Abbey National (now Santander) as an under 16 account. Basic account, no overdraft facilities, cards etc.
Somehow the account went into overdraft, no idea how because up until this point if he tried to use more than he had in the account it was refused. We paid the charge (under protest which was ignored surprise, surprise) but it seems it was processed 'late' which incurred another charge - this happened 3 times. We wrote to the bank and got nowhere, my son is now 21 and hasn't actually used this account for over 4 years. He did get a letter from a finance company and we wrote back saying that we had dealt with this through Santander and believed there was no longer a debt. We've heard nothing about this for ages, until today. My son has received a 'door stop collection' letter from a firm of bailiffs.
We haven't received (to this address - the account was taken out when we lived elsewhere but the collection agency letter came here) any communication, I didn't think bailiffs were employed until a debt had been to court or am I just being naive?
He doesn't owe this money (£266), it was the bank messing up and it was over 5 years ago, he hasn't got the paperwork anymore.
Any idea what we can do about this?
Bailiffs coming to the door is scarey!!!
