Oh and it can take a while for it to do anything first time you use it apparently
The Hitachi HDR505 digital TV recorder is excellent value for money (on offer at Argos for £110 when I bought it, with a £10 Argos voucher, so actual price £100 really). Its hard drive is 500 GB - impressive!
It's extremely user-friendly including the set-up process, although when you switch it on for the very first time it takes about 5 minutes to boot up and display the menu and you think it's not working! Once that's done it takes about 30 seconds to start from standby so I tend to leave it on all the time except at night (power usage is 18 watts in use, 1 watt on standby).

Try unplugging the wii
My neighbour had a problem when the wii was plugged in, her FreeView TV refused to show anything except the wii console.
once it was removed, the TV worked fine.
Few things to check:
If you plug the Ariel in to the TV can you get a signal?
Check with the freeview website about what the signal is like in your postcode area (it might be weak so your ariel might needed turned slightly)
If the above don't make a difference then it might be the freeview box that's faulty.Laters

I have a Hitachi recorder & it crashes a couple of times a week which requires it being unplugged, good news is you don't have to wait to put the plug in again0
