Christening gift ideas

Hi all
I have just been asked to be Godmother to my cousin's 8 month old little girl. I am really excited and chuffed to be asked and this morning started looking at presents but really don't have a clue where to start. The last christening I went to I was 12 so really don't know what people give etc.
Plus, I am rather skint but have about £30 to spend (or does that seem really tight for a Godparent)?
What presents did you parents out there get that were your favourites??

How about a silver bracelet, or a charm bracelet, and you could buy her a charm each year for her birthday? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Hi
I have only been godmother to boys but agree that a charm bracelet is a lovely idea.
or maybe a jewellery box

I think that £30 is easily enough to buy a thoughtful gift - the above link has a section of baby gifts that also has christening gifts and silver jewelleryTwenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. The charm braclet sounds good as the baby will "grow out" of the silver braclet (my mum still has mine and it's tiny!).
Another suggestion is an illustrated childrens bible.

Are the family particularly religious? If so you could get a cross & chain either in gold or silver.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

The two presents I got from godparents that I loved were a links charm bracelet, the silver Thomas sabo is only £20 though and would have loved it just as much, and a silver cross.0

Thanks for the suggestions, they all seem to be fairly similar which is handy.0

I am a godmother and I bought a lovely hard back Winnie the Pooh book and as she was a girl, a fairy wind up snow globe for her room.
When I've not been godparent I usually go for books, I picked up a set of Peter Rabbit books all in a display box for £15 from The Works.0 -
Christening gifts I have given in the past to god children and just as a guest are as follows
A silver pendant and chain for girls with their initial on.
Silver cufflinks for boys with their initials on.
Winnie the Pooh books
Mr Men books
Illustrated childrens bible stories

I have just got one of these http://www.yorkshirecardco.com/personalised-childrens-breakfast-set---baby-girl-2522-p.asp for my nieces daughter for her christening present. I got her son one when he was christened and they are really lovely.0
