Good morning!
I have a huge dead Pampas Grass in my back garden, but it's so big I can't dig it out. Base of plant must be about a foot or so wide and I bet it's been there for over 10 years.
Have cut it down as much as I can but its like cutting through wood now.
Any ideas on how to remove it?

Chainsaw it into little bits then lift it out in sections.
If you haven't got a chainsaw drill lots of holes across it then up it, so it makes a cross then get a crow bar in to break it up. The holes need to be close together to weaken it. If that doesn't work drill more holes in lines, say a star.
I had a similar issue. Took about 3 days of back breaking work but I got it out in the end. :j0 -
my moms chap hacked down the one on moms garden when they moved in as it was huge!
plus i kept saying its well known as a sign that they are swingers:eek::rotfl:
he said it was the most fun thing hes done, he hacked it first then resorted to a blowtorch from work:eek:
now i call him up to destroy bits i want removing in my garden as he enjoys it:o***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
1. Chop up/burn top growth.
2. With sharp spade or mattock hack it into slices like pie/pizza
3. Dig underneath each slice with spade/mattock and lift out. You should be able to slice through the roots.
Grasses won't form woody material - stem or root, so you should be able to do this without any heavy equipment.
I think you'll be surprised how easily it comes out - shouldn't take more than an hour if you are fit and healthy.
A stump grinder isn't necessary and will make a huge mess.0 -
Yep, pick/mattock is needed. It's horrid work, need good gloves too.0
