Mutual Exchange..

In short I need advice. I have agreed to mutually exchange houses with someone in the same town. We are due to sign next week, and the tenancy will start next Monday. However, due to major problems from an ex, I have decided it will be safer in the long run to move out of the town. I really don't want to let the other family down as I have agreed to it, and we've been waiting for months for it to actually go through so what should I do? Pull out or go through with it and then tell the council afterwards that I have decided I do not want the other house and hope that they don't make me sit out the 4 weeks notice??

Has anyone any experience of the latter?

Carry on then give your 4 weeks notice after the exchange has happened - you'll going to have to give 4 weeks where you are now anyway
  • But I wont have to move my furniture and stuff twice, and change my bills over etc

    Fair point

(just a thought, the other family are likely to be gutted - if they offer you a cash incentive to continue you should reject it as any mutual exchange which occurs in consideration of a payment will result in both you and them losing both homes if the landlord(s) find out)

Have you actually got somewhere to move to out of the town? If you have then as soon as you've signed you can give notice that you're going to quit and move in the new place instead of going to the swap.

OP, do you know which town you want to move to? If so, go back to the lists of HA tenants who want to swap from that town to your town -make it a three way swap. :)

Definately wouldn't do this. As it happens, she's a friend so that's why i've hung around to try and get it through. Was originally going to move just so ex didn't know our address but things have got nastier and I think we need to put distance between us.

Yes, we have somewhere. Think that is what I am going to do, but worried they'll accuse me of exchanging under false pretenses or such like...also, wondered what the liklihood is that they'll allow me a discretionary shorter period of notice, as in, I don't move in, that way, they don't need to do all the leaving checks again before another tennant goes in. It seems daft to have me there when I don't need to be, and someone else could have it.

Thanks. Have already tried that, had no replies. Do already have a private rented house ready for us to go to (Wish I could get a HA as rent on the private is 4 times as much as I pay now:eek: but needs must)
