Am I being stupid?

I'm looking into changing my Standard tariff with British Gas to a fixed one due to the incoming expected 19% price hike, but upon reading the fixed tariffs terms it says " Prices fixed at a 19% premium on top of our Standard tariff rates ".
So wouldn't me switching from the standard tariff be a bit pointless because I'm likely to end up paying 19% extra either way.
Switching supplier is not an option unfortunately because we've just moved in and I've already switched from EDF supplying the electric due to never being able to get through on the phone to set up a new account and the switch is due to take place in 10 days time.

Is my thinking the tariff change is pointless, correct?

Stu

That is rather like the A level, and AS level exam questions that couldn't be answered!

We are just gambling when we decide to cap or fix; and we don't even know the odds.

    It's about pain threshold.

With the fixed rate, you know you will only be shafted by a petite donkey, whereas if you go variable, a rhino could lift the curtain and rupture your, er, wallet.

I have just fixed because my old deal is due to end v. soon.

What ever I do I have to face quite a jump to get back on the ladder. I am fixing for 15 months but it is the same price roughly as the best variable rate I can get with a tie in.

I could have fixed further but this would have required a double increase and I didn't feel like that just now. In my case I could take a 25% increase at expiry, of my new deal, and be in no worse a position.

My view is that whilst prices are only going one way I think the regulator will have to step in to moderate the increases by then. I can hope.
