What's involved with applying for outline planning permission and what are the costs?
Any advice and experience would be much appreciated.

Price varies from council to council, all the details will be on your local council website along with a guide of what to do0

Would be useful if you explained what you need planning permission for. You can't always apply for outline permission, for example, for change of use you must apply for full permission. Also, depending on what you need permission for, you might need to submit almost as much information as for a full app.0

Does that help?0 -
Look at your local council website, at their planning portal, and look for recent outline applications. Note the level of detail in their applications.
Ask the duty planning officer at your council what general requirements there would be. From my council's site, I can see that they want a location plan at a certain scale, a site plan at a certain scale, and others.
I'd imagine you'll need a drawing showing where the new boundary will be, the footprint of the house, and general info about the house - will it be single storey, 1.5, 2, how it will match existing houses, what vehicular and pedestrian access will be, etc etc0 -

Again, look at your council's website and see what previous successful apps have used.
I've seen hand-drawn, I've seen full CAD-based architect/building consultant style on my local site.0 -
You need a lot more now for outline planning permission than used to be the case.
Previously you just needed the application form and a site location plan. Now even at outline stage you need full drawings, design and access statement etc.
Have you spoken to the local planning department? Do they even consider tandem development? Some councils will have a local plan that prohibits tandem development in certain areas.0 -

Local plans change, the fact that it has been allowed in the past doesn't mean it will be allowed now (think of those two storey flat roofed extensions you see about). Best bet is to chat to the planning department0
