switching 3 wks from end of contract

Hello

My Fix online 8 contract with Eon ends on 1st July and the latest price hike is worrying me that I may miss the boat if I wait until 1st July to use one of the switching sites.

My question is - can I switch online using one of the switching sites today and then tell my new provider that I want to start in 3 weeks time? The online application screen at moneysupermarket.com has nowhere where I can request the start date. I'm happy if I can do it by phone.

I don't want to get stung by Eon by terminating my contract a week or two early (it will no doubt take another provider a couple of weeks at least to do the switchover) if some automated switchover process doesn't give me the opportunity to say when.

I just want a smooth switchover that takes place immediately after my other contract ends.

cheers,
John

However you may lose your large discount on your last bill if EON are notified before 01 July.

I am in the same boat as you(as are many thousands); I will wait until 01 July - get my final bill and the decide my course of action. I accept that is a risk, but one I am prepared to take.

I think I remember E.On rep saying that if you are on a fixed term deal, you will get any applicable discount for that deal as long as you last the term ... even if that is on their final bill (Eon don't usually give discounts on final bills but this was considered the exception)

As it takes a minimum 4 weeks to switch supplier you should be ok. You cannot dictate when a new supplier takes over your supply, but with a minimum 4 weeks to switch, you will still be with Eon on 01 July if you apply today.

I'm on Eon FOL 8. I submitted readings and asked for a bill as of the 8th June, and the discount has been applied. This was a safeguard as I've now started the switch to another supplier. As far as I can see from the Ts and Cs, Eon should apply all discounts to the full term of FOL 8 as long as you remain on it until 1/7, irrespective of when they are notified. If they didn't honour this, it would amount to about a fiver for me.

or at worst wait until 21st June, as you have a 10 day cooling off period before the new supplier would even bother contacting eon
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll submit my readings and start the process of moving next week. I think the 4 week switchover period will provide sufficient time for my contract to end without being penalised.

    Cheers,
    John
