There seems to be an abundance of tablets to buy, but I have been
put off from purchasing as a lot of reviews claim bad wi-fi connection.

What should i look for in the specs that show how good the wi-fi internet
access would be?

Don't think you'll have an issues if you go for a branded tablet.

None of the tablet manufacturers will give you much information on the internal wifi adaptor beyond telling you which wifi standard it meets (probably 802.11g or 802.11n).

Signal strength and therefore range and connection reliability of the tablet will be determined largely by the size and location of the internal wifi antenna.
