The biggest problem with being coeliac is not ditching the bread - it's avoiding the gluten that they put into so many other things as a food additive.

You will have to become a very careful label reader.

if the GP tells you to avoid wheat you wont get a prescription they are only available for those people who are diagnosed coealiacs (sp)
  • Try your local wholefood store for bulk buying etc. It will make it cheaper for you as one of the problems is that wheats so cheap!
mine is https://www.dailybread.co.uk they have a listing for special diets to give you some ideas

Are you sure that you're wheat-intolerant rather than gluten-intolerant? If it's gluten then you are severely limited in what grains you can eat and must stay right away from soya products as well. I have a friend who has coeliac and she gets a prescription for all sorts of products from her GP.

    Hi,

I've had a similar problem where I've had to cut out certian things from diet and wheat being one of them. I have cut out bread and only eat it when I really have no other choice but to starve, and even then I have brown weight watches. Apparently though I know someone who has ceoliac's (sorry for the spelling lol) and can get vouches for things from the 'free from range' I expect its a little like a prescription. People who cannon eat certain foods should not have to pay over the odds. If anything they should be cheaper as there better for you.

Ask your Dr if there is any financial help with it. Hope this helps.

As the earlier response there is no help for someone who just needs to avoid wheat. A biopsy diagnosed coeliac though can have a certain number of basic items on prescription (the prescriptions are not free though) but we don't get any sort of help or vouchers for the decent stuff they now sell in the supermarkets.
If your doctor has told you that why doesn't s/he give you a prescription for bread & pasta

Because the OP does not state they are a biopsy diagnosed coeliac.

Absolutely, I think my low point was a pre packed bag of mince from Iceland many years ago that had gluten in it as they rolled the mince in flour to bulk it out and stop it sticking. No gravy, no brown sauce, no mustard, never being able to grab a quick sarnie anywhere. Half the pre packed salads have gluten in them so you can't even have that.

The next lowest point is dealing with so called 'chefs' who think cous cous is safe, or the terible argument i had in a health food shop in Leicester who assured me I wasn't really a coelaic just intolerant to pesticides and if I eat a whole food high grain diet I would get better (presumably that is after I died of cancer)

No Frosties or Rice Krispies - arghhhh

Sorry, I got a bit depressed there for a moment

Try rice, as I know it is the best carb source. And if you want healthier, try red rice. Many people say, it has low calories and more fiber for your energy. Anyway, I have tried to eat red rice and found it doesn't taste good as white rice lol. But everything that is good for health never come in sweet right? =)
I usually cook the rice along with fish oil.

Potatoes as well are fine, even chips as long as you make them yourself or make sure that any frozen ones you buy a gluten free. Just avoid many of the oven chip varities as they do have gluten, and avoid them from a chip shop unless the fryer can confirm they use different fat for their battered and non battered items.

  • After having a lot of digestive problems i cut wheat out of my diet for 3 months and lots a stone in the process.
I gradually intrduced wheat again but i dont have as much as i used to. I still cant eat pasta -

tesco do one using spelt flour - spelt fusilli pasta

write to companies and ask which products are wheat free (there are more than you might think) - heinz walkers ect

this book is recommended by lots of people

like others have said it might not be wheat but additives so cooking from scratch might help.

Dont worry you will be fine.
