Wheat Intolerance

Options
Hi forumites,

My Doctor has told me I need to try and cut wheat out of my diet. I was looking at the 'free from' range in the supermarket earlier but it's SO pricey. Short of living on potatoes for the next two months I'm a little stuck for ideas. Has anyone else here had any experience of this? I don't eat red meat.

Cheers, Charlotte.

Oats, Oats and more Oats !

You will not make light fluffy bread but can substitute oats for wheat in more or less anything, healthier too .

Just google oat recipes, thousands out there .

Dependant upon exactly why you are cutting out wheat, I would be careful about the oats suggestion and look into it a bit, it can have some effects.

Make pancakes from rice or potato flour, and use instead of bread. I had to do this a number of years ago and did a big experiment using rice, potato and cornflour to see what made the nicest ones. I think that rice come out nicest for me in the taste test (and crispest)... but you could have fun finding out. Put herbs and spices/ onion or garlic, and you may find that it becomes a favourite food rather than just a replacement.

    Hi,

I've had a similar problem where I've had to cut out certian things from diet and wheat being one of them. I have cut out bread and only eat it when I really have no other choice but to starve, and even then I have brown weight watches. Apparently though I know someone who has ceoliac's (sorry for the spelling lol) and can get vouches for things from the 'free from range' I expect its a little like a prescription. People who cannon eat certain foods should not have to pay over the odds. If anything they should be cheaper as there better for you.

Ask your Dr if there is any financial help with it. Hope this helps.

Cheers guys, I'm going to the market later for fruit and veg, it's right next to a turkish supermarket so I will see what types of flour they have and have a go at making bread.

if the OP is cutting out wheat completely then they will have to be careful with oats too. To be totally sure that the oats aren't contaminated with wheat they will need to look for pure oats, most of the supermarkets stock these in the free from section.

The bonus these days is that supermarkets and manufacturers are alot clearer with their labelling so finding wheat free food is alot easier to spot.

My husband is a Coeliac (was diagnosed 4 years ago) so we've got pretty good at cooking wheat/gluten free so if you need any advice just shout :)

you might find that you are intolerant of the crap they put in it nowadays. Google Chorleywood method. By making your own bread by hand or in a breadmaker might help.

If your doctor has told you that why doesn't s/he give you a prescription for bread & pasta
