car insurance whilst kids are away at uni

Can i ask for advice on the new car insurance rules SORN etc. My 2 teenagers have an old runaround between them that of couse cost a small fortune to insure (18 yr olds x 2)!! In septemeber they both go to university and are not taking the car. I've got plenty of private drriveway to store it on and planned to take the insurance off the car when they went (admiral say they will suspend it ). Now I understand the law has changed and the car must be insured unless you SORN it ?? Is there a difference between SORN and removing the tax. I'm happy to keep the tax running as you lose a bit each time you remove it don't you ? As the car is not likley to be used for upto 12 weeks at a time it seems crazy to keep paying the £158 per month it costs to insure it even if I have to pay an admin. fee to the insurance company. Any car insurance gurus out there can advise ?

In exactly the same position ourselves when son goes to Uni in Sept.

We will be taking out a sorn on the vehicle as this is what takes the place of having insurance. Fortunately insurance runs out in Sept in anycase.
Will probably leave the tax on, as like you say, you lose so much keep cashing it in and renewing.

There's no way round this I'm afraid :-(

@ New york No1 Fan - this is where the DVLA plan falls flat on it's face. If it's taxed it must be insured; so to SORN it means it cannot be taxed or insured.

The public will always lose out when returning a tax disc as only whole months are refunded: another stealth tax the the government coffers in my opinion.

Like Midwife1 and New York No 1 Fan above I too have child off to uni in September and was going to leave car taxed, but SORN it to save insurance.
