Looking for a replacement laptop...

Been looking over hotukdeals and the like, but not yet seen anything suitable.

Basically I have an acer ferrari one. Spec is low power 1.2g dual core athlon, 11.6" screen, radeon 3200.

Its great, other than one problem, in that it gets really hot, and often overheats when under stress for an hour or so, even when on a flat desk (always done this even when new). Makes watching video a problem.

I want something that is at most 14", pref 13.3" or 11.6" screen, an intel cpu, like the low power core 2's, or pentium dual core, and something like an athlon 4330 or geforce 9200. Deffo not an intel 3150, 950 or 4500mhd. Atom cpu like the n5xx and ion might be ok, but only know of the asus 1201n.

Max price £300, can push to £330 for right machine.

The acer timelines were the closest, but they appear to be old models and hard to get hold of now, and sell for way over £400. Were nearer £300 a year ago, so was hoping refurbs for £250 or so might be available somewhere.

Refurbs fine.

Any ideas?

  • Can you push to £379?

I have a timeline 4820 and I'm very pleased with the performance given the excellent battery life

    Intel 4500...

Although I'm not after a gaming laptop, I'd like to be able to load up the odd game like left 4 dead etc. My current one could just about play it at min settings, don't think a 4500 would get in to double figures. Battery life is one thing I'm not too fussed about. Get about 3 hours with my acer which is enough for me.

Just been reading up about the new AMD chip e350 and Radeon HD 6310M.

Anyone know if this suffers from the same 'burn your knees' temperature that the old L310 chip has? Can't see much in the way of reviews. The gpu performance looks bloody good for an integrated chip.

Compared to a CPU benchmark of 502 for the older Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810T-353G25Mn currently at £242

The CPU benchmark of your Ferrari is 672. The machine is post #4 should run much cooler than your Ferrari, as the CPU will be under much less stress. I'm sure that you didn't need me to tell you that. :)

I listed the full model code so that you can check the exact specification. It's a good price and has everything that you requested and more.

It should arrive in perfect condition. If it doesn't they will change it without question.

AMD E-350: CPU benchmark of 735. Forget about it.

Cheers for those suggestions, both excellent prices.

That i3 timeline is a great price, however I would want the one with a dedicated chipset.
Like I said, I need to play the odd game of left 4 dead, civ 4 etc like I can on current laptop (well, at least for 30 minutes till it overheats), the intel 4500 just won't cut it I'm afraid. I don't find my l310 too slow in day to day use, just runs too damn hot, so if the e350 runs cooler, then it might be a contender, esp at £299

This laptop would have been perfect

It isn't an "Intel 4500" in the Timeline i3. You didn't check the specs properly. i3 uses Mobile Intel HM55.

It won't hurt you to give it a try. You have a seven day evaluation period. If it doesn't perform at least as well as the Ferrari with games, give it back. You'll get a full refund.

Perhaps this Acer Timeline 4810TZG-414G32Mn with it's ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics card(512MB RAM) may be more attractive to you. £355
    CPU benchmark of 981.

Here too for £350 plus delivery, but with only 3 month warranty.
