Sanding stairs, edges of tread

Found an earlier thread about refinishing stairs to be quite inspiring, and I've been tackling mine this week They aren't and won't be smart enough to leave bare but I'm stripping them back to repaint afterwards.

Problem is the front edges of several treads are damaged. I'm after having a stair runner eventually but I'm going to have to do something about these first - anyone had similar and what did they do?

with damaged timber parts, you insert a bit of wood and pin/glue it in place.
when completely dry, you can shape it to suit the profile.

yuo may need to clean up the damaged area first. to give a nice clean surface to glue to.
    Get some gorm.
